Preconceptual Counseling

Preconception counseling sessions are an important part of a healthy pregnancy. To help ensure a healthy pregnancy, preconception counseling is recommended for couples. The doctor will use the information gained in counseling to prepare you, your body and your partner for a healthy childbirth experience.

Part of the counseling session will be a thorough analysis of your Medical, Gynecological and Obstetrical History. There will be questions about your immunizations, lifestyle and genetic predispositions for both you and your partner.

If you have a chronic disease such as diabetes or hypertension, a plan will be created so that you are healthy and your conditions are well managed prior to conception. The goal of preconception counseling is to educate you as a couple so that you are well prepared for a healthy and successful pregnancy.

We are happy to sit down and discuss your future pregnancy needs. Preconception plans may be as easy as transitioning from a birth control pill to a vitamin containing folic acid. Other women may have certain medical conditions that need to be under control in order to promote a healthy pregnancy. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, it is just as important to see us prior to pregnancy as it is to during pregnancy. Certain genetic problems could be transmitted to your unborn child, and knowing the proper information prior to conception could be very beneficial when considering a pregnancy.
