Vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC) otherwise known as trial of labor after cesarean section (TOLAC) is offered through our practice. Patients that have had one or two previous cesarean sections may be deemed candidates based upon their individual situations. Most women that have had previous cesarean sections can have successful vaginal deliveries. Operative reports from previous physicians are very useful in determining appropriate candidates. There are risks and benefits that will be discussed by your pregnancy care giver. There are concerns about uterine rupture in women that have had previous uterine surgeries that require incisions into the muscular portion of the uterus. This includes previous cesarean sections and myomectomies. Although the risk is low, we take every precaution to help in your decision making process to have a healthy baby.
Together with Aultman Orrville Hospital, we provide many appropriate candidates the opportunity to attempt a trial of labor after a history of cesarean section. We understand that women with a history of a prior cesarean section may wish to pursue a vaginal delivery. We encourage you to schedule an appointment to discuss your options. A copy of prior cesarean section reports is very helpful in determining if you are a candidate.
